How We Choose Products
This page explains how products are chosen for our guides and shortlist, what evidence we rely on and where the limits of that evidence are.
Our approach: research, not lab testing
We do not run laboratory tests and we do not claim hands-on field testing. Recommendations are built from manufacturer specifications and documentation, published independent reviews, owner feedback and optical fundamentals. Where one source disagrees with another, we say so.
What we weigh
- Low-light potential — exit pupil arithmetic, plus coating and glass specifications.
- Glass quality — ED/HD glass, prism type and coatings, and what independent reviewers report about edge sharpness and color fringing.
- Weather protection — waterproof rating and purge gas as published.
- Ergonomics — weight, size, eye relief and focus design as published, plus owner feedback.
- Durability and warranty — build materials and warranty terms as published; confirm current terms with the maker.
- Fit for the hunt — whether magnification, objective size and weight suit the terrain and light.
How specifications are checked
Magnification, objective diameter and exit pupil are exact arithmetic. Field of view, eye relief and weight are taken from manufacturer or retailer listings and can differ between sources or model years. When listings disagree we show the figure most sources agree on or leave it out. Always confirm specifications on the product page before buying.
Prices, ratings and availability
We do not publish prices, star ratings or review counts. They change constantly and cannot be maintained accurately on an editorial page. Use the product listing for current information.
